A capacity field of 178 converged on Blackall Golf Club over the weekend, for the 2017 Qld Men’s Sand Greens Championship.

State representative Lochlan Coleborn (Mt Coolum) claimed the 2017 Championship with a 5-under total 139. Rounds of 69-70 (which included a triple bogey) were good enough to defeat Golf Queensland Board member Matthew Toomey (Virginia).

2015 champion Jacob O’Dell (Barcaldine) led after the first round, with defending champion Daryl Myles (Moura) making an early charge on day two. Both found trouble midway through the final round and it was left to Coleborn to pip Toomey by a single shot for the win.

Local favourite Edward Choyce (City) captured the B Grade Championship from fellow City member Trevor Anderson. Choyce’s pair of 77s on the demanding par 72 Blackall layout resulted in a comfortable five-shot victory.

After three playoffs in 2016, there was only one required this year to decide the Championship, and that was fought out between Jason Thomas (Cunnamulla) and sand green stalwart Jim Bourke (Baralaba) for the C Grade Championship, after both were tied on 170. After Bourke’s par putt on the first playoff hole stayed out of the hole, Thomas took advantage of the second offering to etch his name on the Ray Anderson Plate.

Friday’s Fourball Championship is always a tight contest with winning scores regularly surpassing 50 stableford points. This year was no exception as Glen Herdman (Gracemere Lakes) and Joshua Antcliff (Rockhampton) claimed the title with 52 points, two shots clear of Terry Mayne (Biloela) and Philip Moran (Wowan).

Blackall Golf Club and especially club president Les Williams, are to be congratulated for a fantastic weekend, with many players commenting that it was one of the best editions of Sand Greens.

Thank you to the major supporter of country golf, City Golf Club for their continued assistance, both as Men’s Sand Greens and Country Week sponsor. Their support allows clubs to host such events.

The sand greens community will next head south to Taroom to contest the 2018 Qld Men’s Sand Greens Championship from June 8-10.
