Shae bows out in Round of 16

Shae Wools-Cobb - Aus Am

It’s the end of a terrific run for Shae Wools-Cobb after bowing out in round 16 of matchplay at the US Amateur.

The 21-year-old was late into the field after finishing second in the qualifying stage, only to receive a call a few days prior with the news he had been promoted.

Wools-Cobb, who hails from the Sunshine Coast, made an impressive display throughout the week as one of four Aussies to make the matchplay event.

The Maroochy River member accounted for LA’s Sam Burns early in the competition with a 2&1 victory in round of 64 matchplay, sending him charging into the marathon 36-hole day.

Accounting for No. 10 seed Garrett Barber 1-up early in the morning, he faced Virginia’s Mark Lawrence Jr in the round of 16 that afternoon.

Early bogeys on the 2nd and 3rd hole gave the Queenslander a slow start, however he fought back gallantly to be all square through nine holes.

By the 13th hole, Lawrence Jr held a 2-up advantage, with Wools-Cobb fighting back again with a birdie on the 14th to settle at 1-down.

Ultimately it was a clutch 2-footer from the American on the 17th that ended Wools-Cobb’s dreams with a commendable 2&1 defeat.

New South Welshman Travis Symth will fly the Australian flag solo into the quarter-finals tomorrow after defeating Will Zalatoris 2&1 in their round of 16 clash.
